What AP is
AP, Advanced Placement, is a set of college-level courses and exams run by the College Board and usually taken in high school. Each exam is scored from 1 to 5 and sat in May. The College Board describes a 5 as extremely well qualified and a 3 as qualified, and says many US colleges grant credit or placement for a 3 or above, but that each college makes its own decisions, so check the policies of the colleges you care about.
How many students score a 3 or higher
In 2026, the share of students scoring 3 or higher ranged from 59.0% on AP Music Theory to 90.0% on AP Research, across the 40 exams the College Board lists. AP pass rates by exam has every exam from 2021 to 2025, and explains why a rate is not a ranking of how hard an exam is.

What the 2027 exams look like
The College Board has changed several AP exams for 2027: calculus and precalculus have shorter multiple-choice sections, and AP Statistics is now five units, with 42 multiple-choice questions, four 10-point free-response questions and a fully digital exam. The formats, dates, calculator rules and unit weights are in AP exam formats, dates and unit weights for 2027.
How a class prepares you for each part
- Multiple choice. Every topic ends with questions you answer aloud or on the whiteboard, and the tutor explains each wrong option, not only the right one.
- Free response. You write the answer, the tutor reads it live and tells you what is missing and what a full answer includes. The tutor reads the writing while you are still in class.
- The weak spots. The recap names what was not secure, and the next class starts there.
- The calendar. Pick the level that fits the weeks you have: how long it takes to prepare for an AP exam.
AP · Inference · Interpreting a confidence interval
A 95% confidence interval for the mean wait time is 12 to 18 minutes. What does “95% confident” mean?
Is the true mean a fixed number, or does it change from sample to sample? The 95% belongs to the method that built the interval, not to this one interval.
A sample written to show how a class sounds. The scores show how the exam would credit each answer. Not a real learner.
The five levels
| Level | What it adds |
|---|---|
| Short | The big picture of every unit, plus the must-know ideas. |
| Standard | Every topic taught once, with worked examples and practice questions. |
| In depth | Standard, plus a second, deeper class on the hardest topics. |
| Extended | Every topic in full depth, plus classes on exam technique. |
| Full syllabus | Everything above, a recap of every unit, and the full mock exams. |
A level is a depth, not a shortcut: every level covers the whole syllabus. You can move up a level at any time, and what you have done is kept.
The Programs page draws every AP program's hours at each of the five levels on one scale, and shows what a pass costs.
AP courses that are not ready-made yet
Ready-made programs for more AP courses are planned: AP Physics 1, AP Physics 2, AP Physics C: Mechanics, AP Computer Science A, AP Macroeconomics, AP Microeconomics, AP Psychology, AP Environmental Science, AP United States History and AP World History: Modern. Each has a page with its 2027 exam format, units and scores. For any of them, or for any other AP course, you can start a class today: say which course you are taking and attach your own notes, and the tutor builds the classes around them.
What it costs
You can start on the Free plan: 45 live class minutes a month (about one class of the default length), no card needed. Pro is $15 a month for 6 hours of live class time, and Pro+ is $30 for 15 hours.
| Plan | Price | Live class time a month | Works out to | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 45 min | about one class | No card needed |
| Pro | $15 a month | 360 min (6 hours) | $2.50 an hour | $150 a year if paid yearly |
| Pro+ | $30 a month | 900 min (15 hours) | $2 an hour | $300 a year if paid yearly |
| Pico | No monthly fee | Pay as you go | $3 an hour ($0.05 a minute) | Paid from a wallet you top up |
The hourly figure is the plan's price divided by the live class hours it includes, when you use them all. Live class time is the tutor teaching you; other limits (study items, messages, uploads) are on the pricing page.
Questions people ask
