How the 2027 exam is built

AP Physics C: Mechanics is sat on Monday, May 3, 2027 (morning session). The exam is 3 hours long: a multiple-choice section of 42 questions in 85 minutes, then the written section. Calculators are permitted; the College Board provides equation sheets and reference tables. Delivery: multiple choice on a device, free response in a handwritten booklet.

  1. Multiple choice42 questions · 85 min · 50% of the score · Calculator allowed
  2. Free response4 questions · 95 min · 50% of the score · Calculator allowed
Each block is as long as its section is in minutes. As the College Board publishes it for May 2027.

What changed for 2027

For May 2027 the College Board updated the number of multiple-choice questions and the timing of each section: 42 questions in 85 minutes, and 4 free-response questions in 95 minutes. The format before was reported as 40 questions in 80 minutes and 100 minutes for the free-response section. The College Board's course pages do not report a change to the course content.

What the written questions ask

  • Four questions, one of each type: a mathematical routine, a translation between representations, an experimental design and analysis, and a qualitative and quantitative translation.

Type AP Physics C: Mechanics in the class wizard, attach your own notes or syllabus if you have them, choose a tutor and join: the tutor teaches on a shared whiteboard and reads what you write while you are still in class.

AtlasAI tutor Example

AP Physics C: Mechanics · Unit 1 · Kinematics

A particle's position is x(t) = 3t2 − 2t (meters, seconds). What is its velocity at t = 2 s?

You wrote x(2) = 3(4) − 4 = 8 m/s 0 of 2

That is the position at 2 s, and its unit is meters. Velocity is how fast position changes. Which operation on x(t) gives that?

Your rewrite v = dx/dt = 6t − 2, so v(2) = 10 m/s 2 of 2
