How the 2027 exam is built

AP World History: Modern is sat on Thursday, May 6, 2027 (morning session). The exam is 3 hours 15 minutes long: a multiple-choice section of 55 questions in 55 minutes, then the written section. No calculator is involved. Delivery: fully digital.

  1. Multiple choice55 questions · 55 min · 40% of the score
  2. Short answer3 questions · 40 min · 20% of the score
  3. Document-based question1 question · 60 min · 25% of the score
  4. Long essay1 question · 40 min · 15% of the score
Each block is as long as its section is in minutes. As the College Board publishes it for May 2027.

What changed for 2027

For May 2027 the three short-answer questions are all required, each on a different period and each with a source (a secondary text, a primary text, and a primary or secondary non-text source), and the long essay is one required prompt rather than a choice. The College Board says the course content, the multiple-choice section and the scoring rubrics are not changing.

What the written questions ask

  • Short answer: three required questions, each on a different period, each with a source.
  • Document-based question: you write an argument from seven documents covering the period 1200 to 2001.
  • Long essay: one required prompt, with a broad question and a short introductory statement.

SparkAI tutor Example

AP World History: Modern · Skills · Point of view

A merchant's letter praises the profits of a long-distance trade route. Explain how his occupation might shape his account.

You wrote He is a merchant, so he is biased. 1 of 2

“Biased” is a label, not an explanation. What would a person who profits from the route be likely to describe, and what might he leave out?

Your rewrite He profits from the trade, so he is likely to describe it in terms of gain and to leave out its costs to others. 2 of 2

A sample written to show how a class sounds. The scores show how the exam would credit each answer. Not a real learner.
