How the 2027 exam is built

AP United States History is sat on Friday, May 7, 2027 (morning session). The exam is 3 hours 15 minutes long: a multiple-choice section of 55 questions in 55 minutes, then the written section. No calculator is involved. Delivery: fully digital.

  1. Multiple choice55 questions · 55 min · 40% of the score
  2. Short answer3 questions · 40 min · 20% of the score
  3. Document-based question1 question · 60 min · 25% of the score
  4. Long essay1 question · 40 min · 15% of the score
Each block is as long as its section is in minutes. As the College Board publishes it for May 2027.

What changed for 2027

For May 2027 the three short-answer questions are all required, each on a different period and each with a source (a secondary text, a primary text, and a primary or secondary non-text source), and the long essay is one required prompt rather than a choice. The College Board says the course content, the multiple-choice section and the scoring rubrics are not changing.

What the written questions ask

  • Short answer: three required questions, each on a different period. The first uses secondary sources, the second a primary text source and the third a primary or secondary non-text source.
  • Document-based question: you write an argument from seven documents covering the period 1754 to 1980.
  • Long essay: one required prompt, with a broad question and a short introductory statement.

AP United States History · Skills · The thesis

Why does “The American Revolution changed America” not earn the thesis point on an essay?

You wrote It is about the Revolution. 0 of 1

It names a topic but argues nothing. A thesis makes a defensible claim and sets out a line of reasoning. What changed, in which ways, and why does that matter?

Your rewrite It makes no claim a reader could disagree with and gives no line of reasoning. A thesis would say what changed and how. 1 of 1
