The short answer

In the US, tutors on marketplaces commonly list from about $25 to $100 or more an hour: a 2025 study of 3,600 tutors found math averaging $46 (range $24 to $108) and SAT prep $62 (range $25 to $170). In the UK, GCSE tutoring is commonly listed at about £30 to £50 an hour and A level at £35 to £60. Prices rise with level, tutor experience and London or other big-city rates. These are listing prices, not a survey of what families pay.

A note on these numbers

There is no independent national survey of what families pay for tutoring. Almost every price below is what a marketplace, an agency or a tutoring provider publishes, so each has an interest in the figure. We give the source and the date for each, and we give ranges rather than a single number.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median hourly wage of $20.84 for tutors in May 2025. That is what employed tutors earn, not what a family pays, and it does not include self-employed marketplace tutors.

London and the South East cost more: one agency lists about £45 to £70 an hour there. By tutor type, one guide puts university students at £10 to £15 an hour, graduates and qualified teachers at £15 to £30 and specialist professionals at £35 to £70 or more.

UAE and Singapore

For IGCSE, a tutoring provider in the UAE lists online one-to-one options from about AED 34 to AED 300 an hour depending on the platform, and tuition centers at AED 200 to AED 500 an hour. In Singapore a personal-finance site lists one-to-one rates by tutor type: for upper secondary S$35 to S$50 an hour for part-time or student tutors, S$45 to S$70 for full-time tutors and S$70 to S$100 for current or former teachers; for junior college and IB S$40 to S$150 depending on the tutor. Both are estimates from sources with an interest in tuition.

What changes the price

  • Level and subject. Test prep, advanced math and A level cost more than general school subjects.
  • Who the tutor is. A university student charges much less than a qualified teacher or an exam specialist.
  • Where you live. Big cities cost more.
  • Online or in person. The sources disagree. One UK guide says online runs about £5 an hour cheaper; another says in-person lessons run £10 to £20 above the national average; a US consumer guide quotes individual tutors only. Tutor expertise moves the price more than format.
  • Package or pay as you go. Agencies often sell blocks of hours. Check the cancellation rules.

What a month costs

A month is about 4.3 weeks. The table multiplies three hourly rates by the hours a week, and shows what the same amount of live class time costs on Tutix at its cheapest.

A human tutor and an AI tutor are different services, so the comparison is about what a regular schedule costs, not about which teaches better. Tutix's figure is its plan price for that many live minutes, including extra minutes at the pay-as-you-go rate where a plan's allowance runs out.

Costs people forget to ask about

  • Registration or enrollment fees at centers and agencies.
  • Cancellation and no-show rules on packages of hours.
  • Materials and past-paper fees.
  • Platform fees added to a tutor's listed rate.
  • What happens to unused hours at the end of a month or a term.

How to decide what to spend

Start from the goal, not the rate. A topic you keep missing needs a handful of hours; a whole exam needs a plan. Then compare the cost of the hours that include practice with feedback, which are the ones that move marks. If you want to try before paying, the affordable tutoring guide shows what Tutix costs and how to start free.

A program pass is a different way to buy: one program's class hours at one level, once, with no subscription. The prices are on the Programs page.
