How an AP score is made
The College Board describes the process in four steps. The pages it comes from are listed under Sources.
- Multiple choice. The section is scored by computer, and the total number of correct answers is the multiple-choice score.
- Free response. Specially appointed college professors and experienced AP teachers score this section of the exam, at the annual AP Reading held during the first two weeks in June.
- A composite. The total scores from the free-response section and the multiple-choice section are combined to form a composite score.
- The 1 to 5 scale. The composite is translated onto the five-point scale using statistical processes designed to ensure that a 3 this year reflects the same level of achievement as a 3 last year.
Some courses are assessed differently: AP Seminar, AP Research, AP Computer Science Principles, the three AP Art and Design courses and AP African American Studies. Their course pages on the College Board's site give the details.
What each score means
| Score | The College Board's label | College course grade it is compared with |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | Extremely well qualified | A+ or A |
| 4 | Very well qualified | A-, B+ or B |
| 3 | Qualified | B-, C+ or C |
| 2 | Possibly qualified | None listed |
| 1 | No recommendation | None listed |
The College Board calls a score a recommendation about how qualified you are to receive college credit and placement. It does not call any score passing: a 3 or above is the usual threshold for credit, and the pages on pass rates count the share who reached it.
Wrong answers do not cost points
The College Board's help centre says it plainly: points are not deducted for incorrect answers and no points are awarded for unanswered questions. A multiple-choice question you leave blank can only score zero, so answer every one.
What is a good AP score?
A good AP score depends on what you want the score to do. For college credit or placement, a good score is the one your college's policy asks for, and policies differ by college and by exam: some accept a 3, some ask for a 4 or a 5, and some give placement without credit. The College Board's credit policy search lets you look up a college's policy exam by exam.
For a sense of scale, here is how students scored in 2026. Across the 40 exams the College Board lists, the median exam had 72% of students at 3 or higher and 45% at 4 or 5, and 40 of the 40 had more than half of students at 3 or higher. Those are shares of everyone who sat each exam, not a guide to how hard an exam is: see AP pass rates by exam for every exam and why the rates move.
What the College Board does not say
The pages above describe the method and give no formula that turns a number of correct answers into a score, and they give no fixed percentage for a 3, a 4 or a 5. Any AP score calculator is therefore an estimate. Treat it as a rough guide to where your practice results sit, and compare your own practice scores across several full papers rather than reading one calculation as a prediction.
Questions people ask
How are AP exams scored?
A computer scores the multiple-choice section. Specially appointed college professors and experienced AP teachers score the free-response section at the AP Reading in the first two weeks of June. The College Board combines the two scores into a composite and translates it onto a scale of 1 to 5.
Do you lose points for wrong answers on AP exams?
No. The College Board says points are not deducted for incorrect answers and no points are awarded for unanswered questions, so it is better to answer every multiple-choice question.
What do the AP scores 1 to 5 mean?
5 is extremely well qualified, 4 is very well qualified, 3 is qualified, 2 is possibly qualified and 1 is no recommendation. The College Board compares a 5 to a college course grade of A+ or A, a 4 to A-, B+ or B, and a 3 to B-, C+ or C.
What is a passing score on an AP exam?
The College Board does not label any score passing. A 3, which it calls qualified, is the usual threshold for college credit, but each college sets its own policy and some ask for a 4 or a 5.
Is there a curve on AP exams?
The College Board translates the composite score onto the 1 to 5 scale using statistical processes designed so that a 3 this year reflects the same level of achievement as a 3 last year. It gives no fixed percentage needed for any score in the pages cited here.
Are all AP exams scored the same way?
No. AP Seminar, AP Research, AP Computer Science Principles, the three AP Art and Design courses and AP African American Studies use different assessments, so their course pages describe how they are scored.
