# A calculus tutor: that watches every step

**The short answer.** Tutix teaches calculus live. Ready-made programs cover every unit of AP Calculus AB and BC, from limits to integrals and, in BC, series. The AI tutor teaches on a shared whiteboard, reads your working as you write it and points out the step where a mark would be lost.

- Live, spoken, one-to-one
- Your working is read while you are in class
- 3 ready-made programs
- Free plan: 45 live minutes a month

## How a calculus class works

A Tutix class is a live, spoken lesson one-to-one with an AI tutor. For calculus:

- Steps, not just answers. Calculus marks are for the chain of reasoning, so you write it and the tutor reads each line.
- Graphs and tables first. Limits and rates are taught from pictures, so the algebra has something to mean.
- Free-response practice. You answer a full question, the tutor tells you what is missing and what a full answer includes.
- The weak unit gets the next class. The recap says which unit was not secure, and the following class starts there.

A class, opened. A sample written to show how a class sounds (not a real learner); the scores show how the exam would credit each answer.

> **Limits · Indeterminate form.** Question: Evaluate the limit of (x^2 − 1)/(x − 1) as x approaches 1.
> The student wrote: It is 0/0, so the limit does not exist. (the exam would credit 0 of 2)
> The tutor: 0/0 is not an answer, it is a signal that more work is needed. Factor the numerator and see what cancels.
> The student then wrote: (x − 1)(x + 1)/(x − 1) = x + 1, which approaches 2. (the exam would credit 2 of 2)

## Programs that teach it

Each program is taught unit by unit as 15-minute lessons, at five levels from a quick review to the deepest level.

| Program | Curriculum | Units | Topics | Standard (hours) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| AP Calculus AB | AP | 8 | 81 | 29.2 |
| AP Calculus BC | AP | 10 | 111 | 39.8 |
| AP Precalculus | AP | 4 | 58 | 26.2 |

Every program that teaches calculus sits beside the others, to one hours scale, on the Programs page.

## What the programs cover

The units of each ready-made calculus program, as the course itself divides them.

### AP Calculus AB

- Limits and Continuity
- Differentiation: Definition and Fundamental Properties
- Differentiation: Composite, Implicit, and Inverse Functions
- Contextual Applications of Differentiation
- Analytical Applications of Differentiation
- Integration and Accumulation of Change
- Differential Equations
- Applications of Integration

### AP Calculus BC

- Limits and Continuity
- Differentiation: Definition and Fundamental Properties
- Differentiation: Composite, Implicit, and Inverse Functions
- Contextual Applications of Differentiation
- Analytical Applications of Differentiation
- Integration and Accumulation of Change
- Differential Equations
- Applications of Integration
- Parametric Equations, Polar Coordinates, and Vector-Valued Functions
- Infinite Sequences and Series

### AP Precalculus

- Polynomial and Rational Functions
- Exponential and Logarithmic Functions
- Trigonometric and Polar Functions
- Functions Involving Parameters, Vectors, and Matrices

Planned: A Level Mathematics and A Level Further Mathematics. Until a ready-made program exists you can start a class on any of them from your own notes, and see every program, including those coming soon.

## What the tutor watches for

The mistakes below cost marks most often in calculus. A tutor that knows them can catch them at the step where they happen.

- Treating 0/0 as an answer instead of a signal that more work is needed.
- Forgetting the chain rule, or multiplying two derivatives when a product needs both orders.
- Giving a function's value when the question asks for its derivative at a point.
- Leaving out the constant of integration, or the units in a rate question.
- In series, concluding convergence because the terms go to zero, which is necessary but not sufficient.

## What it costs

You can start on the Free plan: 45 live class minutes a month (about one class of the default length), no card needed. Pro is $15 a month for 6 hours of live class time, and Pro+ is $30 for 15 hours.

| Plan | Price | Live class time a month | Works out to | Note |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Free | $0 | 45 min | about one class | No card needed |
| Pro | $15 a month | 360 min (6 hours) | $2.50 an hour | $150 a year if paid yearly |
| Pro+ | $30 a month | 900 min (15 hours) | $2 an hour | $300 a year if paid yearly |
| Pico | No monthly fee | Pay as you go | $3 an hour ($0.05 a minute) | Paid from a wallet you top up |

The hourly figure is the plan's price divided by the live class hours it includes, when you use them all. Live class time is the tutor teaching you; other limits (study items, messages, uploads) are on the pricing page.

## Questions

**Can an AI tutor teach calculus?**

Yes. The tutor explains the idea, works examples with you on the whiteboard and reads your free-response answers as you write them.

**Which calculus courses does Tutix cover?**

AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC are ready-made, along with AP Precalculus as the course before them. For another calculus course, start a class from your own notes.

**Should I take AB or BC?**

BC covers everything in AB and adds parametric, polar and vector-valued functions and infinite series, so it moves faster. See the comparison for how to choose.

**Is calculus too hard to learn from an AI tutor?**

Calculus is learned by working problems and getting feedback on each step, which is what a live tutor gives. It will explain a step again, in different words, as many times as you ask.
