# A biology tutor: that teaches you to explain

**The short answer.** Tutix teaches biology live: the AI tutor explains each idea, shows the diagrams and asks you to explain it back, then reads your written answer and tells you which points are missing. Ready-made programs cover AP Biology and IGCSE Biology, Core and Extended, and any other course can be taught from your own notes.

- Live, spoken, one-to-one
- Your working is read while you are in class
- 2 ready-made programs
- Free plan: 45 live minutes a month

## How a biology class works

A Tutix class is a live, spoken lesson one-to-one with an AI tutor. For biology:

- Say it in the right words. Biology marks go to the correct term, so the tutor teaches the vocabulary and asks you to use it.
- Describe, then explain. "Describe" wants the trend with numbers; "explain" wants the reason.
- Diagrams and data. Lessons carry the pictures and graphs a course uses, and you are asked what they show.
- Written answers read live, with the recap naming the points you tend to leave out.

A class, opened. A sample written to show how a class sounds (not a real learner); the scores show how the exam would credit each answer.

> **Transport · Osmosis.** Question: Potato strips lose mass in a concentrated sugar solution. Explain why.
> The student wrote: Sugar goes into the potato. (the exam would credit 0 of 3)
> The tutor: The strips lost mass, so something left them. What is the most abundant substance inside the cells, and which way will it move?
> The student then wrote: Water moves out of the cells by osmosis, from a higher water potential inside to a lower one in the concentrated solution. (the exam would credit 3 of 3)

## Programs that teach it

Each program is taught unit by unit as 15-minute lessons, at five levels from a quick review to the deepest level.

| Program | Curriculum | Units | Topics | Standard (hours) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| AP Biology | AP | 8 | 60 | 23.8 |
| IGCSE Biology | IGCSE | 20 | 50 | 24.5 |

Every program that teaches biology sits beside the others, to one hours scale, on the Programs page.

## What the programs cover

The units of each ready-made biology program, as the course itself divides them.

### AP Biology

- Chemistry of Life
- Cells
- Cellular Energetics
- Cell Communication and Cell Cycle
- Heredity
- Gene Expression and Regulation
- Natural Selection
- Ecology

### IGCSE Biology

- Characteristics and classification of living organisms
- Organisation of the organism
- Movement into and out of cells
- Biological molecules
- Enzymes
- Plant nutrition
- Human nutrition
- Transport in plants
- Transport in animals
- Diseases and immunity
- Gas exchange in humans
- Respiration
- Excretion in humans
- Coordination and response
- Drugs
- Reproduction
- Inheritance; Biotechnology and genetic modification
- Variation and selection
- Organisms and their environment
- Human influences on ecosystems

Planned: A Level Biology. Until a ready-made program exists you can start a class on any of them from your own notes, and see every program, including those coming soon.

## What the tutor watches for

The mistakes below cost marks most often in biology. A tutor that knows them can catch them at the step where they happen.

- Saying an enzyme is killed by heat: it is a protein, and it is denatured.
- Explaining osmosis as water moving to where there is more solute, without saying it moves from higher to lower water potential across a membrane.
- Describing a graph without numbers, or explaining when asked only to describe.
- Mixing up similar terms, such as mitosis and meiosis or transcription and translation.
- Forgetting the 2 in 2pq when finding heterozygotes in a Hardy-Weinberg question.

## What it costs

You can start on the Free plan: 45 live class minutes a month (about one class of the default length), no card needed. Pro is $15 a month for 6 hours of live class time, and Pro+ is $30 for 15 hours.

| Plan | Price | Live class time a month | Works out to | Note |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Free | $0 | 45 min | about one class | No card needed |
| Pro | $15 a month | 360 min (6 hours) | $2.50 an hour | $150 a year if paid yearly |
| Pro+ | $30 a month | 900 min (15 hours) | $2 an hour | $300 a year if paid yearly |
| Pico | No monthly fee | Pay as you go | $3 an hour ($0.05 a minute) | Paid from a wallet you top up |

The hourly figure is the plan's price divided by the live class hours it includes, when you use them all. Live class time is the tutor teaching you; other limits (study items, messages, uploads) are on the pricing page.

## Questions

**Can an AI tutor teach biology?**

Yes for the concepts, vocabulary and written answers a course asks for. It cannot run a practical with you, so lab skills need a teacher or a lab.

**Which biology courses does Tutix cover?**

AP Biology and IGCSE Biology (Core and Extended) are ready-made. A Level Biology is planned, and any other course can be taught from your own notes.

**Does it help with long-answer questions?**

Yes. You write the answer, the tutor reads it live and tells you which points a full answer includes and which you left out.

**Can it help with biology data questions?**

Yes. The tutor teaches how to describe a trend with numbers and where a line changes, and then how to explain it.
