## How the 2027 exam is built

AP World History: Modern is sat on Thursday, May 6, 2027 (morning session). The exam is 3 hours 15 minutes long: a multiple-choice section of 55 questions in 55 minutes, then the written section. No calculator is involved. Delivery: fully digital.

| Exam section | Detail |
| --- | --- |
| Multiple choice | 55 questions · 55 min · 40% of the score |
| Short answer | 3 questions · 40 min · 20% of the score |
| Document-based question | 1 question · 60 min · 25% of the score |
| Long essay | 1 question · 40 min · 15% of the score |

## What changed for 2027

For May 2027 the three short-answer questions are all required, each on a different period and each with a source (a secondary text, a primary text, and a primary or secondary non-text source), and the long essay is one required prompt rather than a choice. The College Board says the course content, the multiple-choice section and the scoring rubrics are not changing.

## What the written questions ask

- Short answer: three required questions, each on a different period, each with a source.
- Document-based question: you write an argument from seven documents covering the period 1200 to 2001.
- Long essay: one required prompt, with a broad question and a short introductory statement.

## How students have scored, 2021 to 2026

How students scored in 2026 (share of students at each AP score):

| Score | Share of students |
| --- | --- |
| 5 | 14% |
| 4 | 36% |
| 3 | 16% |
| 2 | 26% |
| 1 | 8% |

The share of students scoring 3 or higher on AP World History: Modern was 52.2% in 2021 and 66% in 2026. The College Board reviews each exam's score standards every five to ten years, so a change from one year to the next can reflect a new standard as well as how students did. AP pass rates for every exam shows the whole table.

| Year | 5 | 4 | 3 | 2 | 1 | 3 or higher | Students | Mean score |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 2026 | 14% | 36% | 16% | 26% | 8% | 66% | n/a | n/a |

| 2023 | 15.3% | 21.9% | 27.4% | 22.3% | 13.0% | 64.7% | 350,353 | 3.04 |
| 2022 | 13.2% | 21.9% | 27.0% | 23.7% | 14.3% | 62.1% | 314,716 | 2.96 |
| 2021 | 9.7% | 18.5% | 24.0% | 28.9% | 19.0% | 52.2% | 302,232 | 2.71 |

The College Board describes a 5 as extremely well qualified and a 3 as qualified, and says many US colleges grant credit or placement for a 3 or above, but each college makes its own decisions: check the policies of the colleges you care about.

## How to prepare with Tutix today

Type AP World History: Modern in the class wizard, attach your own notes or syllabus if you have them, choose a tutor and join: the tutor teaches on a shared whiteboard and reads what you write while you are still in class.

A class, opened. A sample written to show how a class sounds (not a real learner); the scores show how the exam would credit each answer.

> **Skills · Point of view.** Question: A merchant's letter praises the profits of a long-distance trade route. Explain how his occupation might shape his account.
> The student wrote: He is a merchant, so he is biased. (the exam would credit 1 of 2)
> The tutor: “Biased” is a label, not an explanation. What would a person who profits from the route be likely to describe, and what might he leave out?
> The student then wrote: He profits from the trade, so he is likely to describe it in terms of gain and to leave out its costs to others. (the exam would credit 2 of 2)

> **What the tutor will not do.** It is built to explain and give feedback, not to write an essay, a response or any work you submit for credit. It explains the ideas and what a strong answer needs, so the work stays yours.

## What a ready-made program adds, and what it costs
