## A class in AP Human Geography, opened

Every class works like this. The tutor asks, you answer in your own words, and it reads what you wrote while you are still in the room, then tells you what is missing and asks you to try again.

A class, opened. A sample written to show how a class sounds (not a real learner); the scores show how the exam would credit each answer.

> **Unit 2 · The demographic transition model.** Question: In the demographic transition model, what change defines Stage 2?
> The student wrote: Birth rates fall. (the exam would credit 0 of 1)
> The tutor: Zoom out: which rate moves first? Better food and medicine lower death rates while birth rates stay high, so the population grows fast. Birth rates fall later, in Stage 3.
> The student then wrote: Death rates fall while birth rates stay high, so natural increase rises. (the exam would credit 1 of 1)

## How the AP Human Geography exam is built

The 2027 exam is on Monday, May 3, in the morning session, and it is taken fully on a device. It has 60 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes and 3 free-response questions of 7 points each in 75 minutes, each section worth half of the score. About 30 to 40% of the multiple-choice questions use stimulus material such as maps, charts and images.

| Exam section | Detail |
| --- | --- |
| Multiple-choice | 60 questions · 60 min · 50% of the score |
| Free-response | 3 questions · 75 min · 50% of the score |
