**The short answer.** A ready-made A Level Biology program is planned for Tutix. Until it is ready, you can start an A Level Biology class today: type the subject, add your syllabus or notes, and the AI tutor teaches it live, reads your answers and remembers each class. This page explains how Cambridge 9700 is examined.

- Cambridge syllabus 9700
- Ready-made program planned; classes built from your syllabus today
- Exams are in the June and November series, and in March for centres in India.
- AS is the first half of an A Level

## Where Tutix is today

A ready-made A Level Biology program is planned and not available yet. You can start a A Level Biology class now: the tutor teaches live from your syllabus or notes. Ready-made programs exist for other courses.

## The qualification

Cambridge International AS & A Level Biology is syllabus 9700. The syllabus for exams in 2025 to 2027 is the 2025-2027 syllabus; a 2028-2030 syllabus follows. Exams are in the June and November series, and in March for centres in India. AS candidates are eligible for grades a to e (in lower case) and A Level candidates for A* to E.

## The papers

| Paper | Title | Time | Marks | AS share | A Level share |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Multiple choice (AS content) | 1 h 15 | 40 | 31% | 15.5% |
| 2 | AS structured questions | 1 h 15 | 60 | 46% | 23% |
| 3 | Advanced Practical Skills | 2 h | 40 | 23% | 11.5% |
| 4 | A Level structured questions (A Level content; AS knowledge required) | 2 h | 100 | Not offered | 38.5% |
| 5 | Planning, Analysis and Evaluation | 1 h 15 | 30 | Not offered | 11.5% |

AS is Papers 1, 2 and 3 taken together in one series. The A Level is all five papers, staged over two years or all in one series. Papers 3 and 5 test practical skills in an exam, not as coursework. Electronic calculators are allowed in the exams.

## What the marks test

At both AS and A Level, Cambridge gives 40% to knowledge and understanding, 40% to handling, applying and evaluating information and 20% to experimental skills and investigations. Cambridge calls these weightings approximate.

| Assessment objective | AS Level | A Level |
| --- | --- | --- |
| AO1 Knowledge and understanding | 40% | 40% |
| AO2 Handling, applying and evaluating information | 40% | 40% |
| AO3 Experimental skills and investigations | 20% | 20% |

| Assessment objective | Paper 1 | Paper 2 | Paper 3 | Paper 4 | Paper 5 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| AO1 Knowledge and understanding | 50% | 50% | 0% | 50% | 0% |
| AO2 Handling, applying and evaluating information | 50% | 50% | 0% | 50% | 0% |
| AO3 Experimental skills and investigations | 0% | 0% | 100% | 0% | 100% |

## What the syllabus covers

Cambridge lists eleven topics for AS Level Biology, numbered 1 to 11, and eight more for the full A Level, numbered 12 to 19. Candidates at both levels also study practical skills.

### AS Level topics

1. Cell structure
2. Biological molecules
3. Enzymes
4. Cell membranes and transport
5. The mitotic cell cycle
6. Nucleic acids and protein synthesis
7. Transport in plants
8. Transport in mammals
9. Gas exchange
10. Infectious diseases
11. Immunity

### Added at A Level

12. Energy and respiration
13. Photosynthesis
14. Homeostasis
15. Control and coordination
16. Inheritance
17. Selection and evolution
18. Classification, biodiversity and conservation
19. Genetic technology

## How to prepare with Tutix today

Type A Level Biology in the class wizard, attach your own notes or syllabus if you have them, choose a tutor and join: the tutor teaches on a shared whiteboard and reads what you write while you are still in class.

A class, opened. A sample written to show how a class sounds (not a real learner); the scores show how the exam would credit each answer.

> **Photosynthesis · Limiting factors.** Question: Explain why the rate of photosynthesis stops increasing as light intensity rises. [2 marks]
> The student wrote: The plant cannot use any more light. (the exam would credit 1 of 2)
> The tutor: That is the observation, not the explanation. Name what has happened to light as a factor, and name one factor that now limits the rate.
> The student then wrote: Light is no longer the limiting factor. Another factor, such as carbon dioxide concentration or temperature, is now limiting the rate. (the exam would credit 2 of 2)

> **What the tutor will not do.** It is built to explain and give feedback, not to write coursework, practical write-ups or any work you hand in as your own. It helps you understand the topic and what a strong answer needs, so the work stays yours.

## What a ready-made program adds, and what it costs

Ready-made programs, such as IGCSE Physics, come with lessons and questions reviewed in advance, at five levels. The Free plan includes 45 live class minutes a month with no card; see the plans.

The twelve ready-made programs are drawn to scale, with a real lesson to read, on the Programs page.

## Questions

**Does Tutix have an A Level Biology program?**

Not ready-made yet; it is planned. Today you can start an A Level Biology class: type the subject, attach your syllabus or notes, and the tutor builds the classes around them.

**What topics are in A Level Biology?**

AS Level covers Cell structure, Biological molecules, Enzymes, Cell membranes and transport, The mitotic cell cycle, Nucleic acids and protein synthesis, Transport in plants, Transport in mammals, Gas exchange, Infectious diseases and Immunity. The A Level adds Energy and respiration, Photosynthesis, Homeostasis, Control and coordination, Inheritance, Selection and evolution, Classification, biodiversity and conservation and Genetic technology. Both levels also assess practical skills.

**What papers are in A Level Biology?**

Paper 1, Multiple choice, 1 h 15; Paper 2, AS structured questions, 1 h 15; Paper 3, Advanced Practical Skills, 2 h; Paper 4, A Level structured questions, 2 h; Paper 5, Planning, Analysis and Evaluation, 1 h 15.

**What is the difference between AS and A Level Biology?**

AS is Papers 1, 2 and 3 taken together in one series. The A Level is all five papers, staged over two years or all in one series. Papers 3 and 5 test practical skills in an exam, not as coursework.

**Which A Level Biology syllabus should I follow?**

The syllabus for exams in 2025 to 2027 is the 2025-2027 syllabus; a 2028-2030 syllabus follows. Check the syllabus your school or exam centre is entering you for.
