# An AI tutor: that teaches you live

**The short answer.** An AI tutor is software that teaches one student at a time and adapts to their answers the way a human tutor would. Tutix's AI tutor holds a live spoken class, teaches on a shared whiteboard, reads your work as you write it and remembers what each class covered. It is for students aged 13 and over, and you can start free.

- Talks with you in real time, by voice
- Teaches on a shared whiteboard and slides
- Reads your answers while you are still in class
- Remembers what each class covered and plans the next from it
- Any subject, plus ready-made AP and IGCSE programs
- Free plan: 45 live minutes a month

## What is an AI tutor?

An AI tutor is a program that teaches. It explains an idea, asks you a question, reads your answer, tells you what is right and what is missing, and chooses what to do next. The good ones do this in a conversation, at your pace, at any hour.

That is different from a general-purpose AI chatbot, which answers whatever it is asked and then waits. A tutor has a plan for the lesson, notices the mistake you keep making, and does not move on until you can do the thing. Three things separate the two:

- It teaches, it does not just answer. A class has an order, a question to answer at each step and feedback on what you wrote.
- It remembers. The next class starts from what you actually covered, including the point you got wrong last time.
- It is accountable to progress. It tells you, and your parent, what was covered, what was not and what comes next.

## How a Tutix class works

1. Choose what to study. Pick a ready-made AP or IGCSE program, or tell the tutor your subject and upload your syllabus or your own notes.
2. Pick a tutor and a rhythm. Seven tutor personalities, from a calm step-by-step strategist to a Socratic guide. Book a fixed weekly time, set each week fresh, or start a class whenever you like.
3. Join the class. You need a browser and a microphone. Nobody is on camera. The tutor speaks, teaches on a shared whiteboard and slides, and asks you to answer as you go.
4. Get feedback on your work. The tutor reads what you write while you are still in class and points out what is missing.
5. Read the recap. After a class you can read what was covered, what was not and what comes next, and the next class is planned from it.

If you would rather follow a whole course than ask one question at a time, the twelve ready-made AP and IGCSE programs are drawn to scale on the Programs page, with their hours at each of five levels and a real lesson to read.

A class, opened. A sample written to show how a class sounds (not a real learner); the scores show how the exam would credit each answer.

> **Biology · Describing a graph.** Question: Describe the effect of temperature on the rate of water loss from the upper and lower surfaces of a leaf. [3 marks]
> The student wrote: Transpiration increases as temperature increases because more water evaporates from the leaf. (the exam would credit 1 of 3)
> The tutor: You have the trend. Now compare the two surfaces with numbers, and say where it levels off. “Describe” does not need the “because”.
> The student then wrote: Water loss rises from 10 °C to about 35 °C, then levels off. The lower surface loses more than the upper surface at every temperature. (the exam would credit 3 of 3)

## What an AI tutor does well, and where it falls short

An AI tutor is strongest at patient, frequent practice with feedback, and weakest where a person's judgement or presence is the point.

### It does well

- Availability. A class can start at 7 in the morning or 11 at night, and nobody has to be free.
- Patience. It will explain the same step again, and it does not get tired or compare you with anyone.
- Practice with feedback. You write, it reads and responds, you try again. That loop is where much of the learning is.
- Cost. Live class time works out to a few dollars an hour, so classes can be frequent.

### It falls short

An AI tutor is not the right tool for everything. It cannot sit beside a student at a lab bench, it can make mistakes like any AI, and it is not a replacement for a school teacher or for the encouragement of someone who knows your child. It works best for regular, patient, one-to-one practice and for checking understanding before a test.

## What it costs

You can start on the Free plan: 45 live class minutes a month (about one class of the default length), no card needed. Pro is $15 a month for 6 hours of live class time, and Pro+ is $30 for 15 hours.

| Plan | Price | Live class time a month | Works out to | Note |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Free | $0 | 45 min | about one class | No card needed |
| Pro | $15 a month | 360 min (6 hours) | $2.50 an hour | $150 a year if paid yearly |
| Pro+ | $30 a month | 900 min (15 hours) | $2 an hour | $300 a year if paid yearly |
| Pico | No monthly fee | Pay as you go | $3 an hour ($0.05 a minute) | Paid from a wallet you top up |

The hourly figure is the plan's price divided by the live class hours it includes, when you use them all. Live class time is the tutor teaching you; other limits (study items, messages, uploads) are on the pricing page.

## Age, data and privacy

Tutix is for students aged 13 and over; under 18, a parent or guardian needs to agree. A parent sets up a child's classes with an email invite the child verifies themselves, so nobody shares a login. Classes use the microphone only, with no camera. Tutix does not sell student data or use it to train outside AI models, and you can export or delete your data from Account Settings. A parent who arranged a class can listen to it live, including the microphone, and read its transcript; the student's screen says so while they do. Read the privacy policy for the detail.

## Questions

**What is an AI tutor?**

An AI tutor is a program that teaches one student at a time: it explains, asks questions, reads the answers and adapts to what the student gets right and wrong. Tutix's AI tutor does this in a live spoken class on a shared whiteboard.

**Is an AI tutor better than a human tutor?**

Neither is better for everyone. An AI tutor is available at any hour, costs a few dollars an hour of live class time and never gets tired. A human tutor can read a student's mood, sit beside them and be a mentor. Some families use an AI tutor for regular practice and a human for occasional specialist help.

**How much does an AI tutor cost?**

On Tutix, live class time works out to about $2.50 an hour on Pro and $2 an hour on Pro+ when all included minutes are used. The Free plan includes 45 live minutes a month with no card.

**Can an AI tutor help with AP and IGCSE?**

Yes. Tutix has ready-made programs for AP Calculus AB and BC, Precalculus, Statistics, Biology, Chemistry and Human Geography, and for IGCSE Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and you can ask the tutor to teach any other syllabus from your own notes.

**What age is an AI tutor suitable for?**

Tutix is for students aged 13 and over. Under 18, a parent or guardian needs to agree, and a parent can set up and follow a child's classes.

**Do I need to install anything?**

No. You need a current browser and a microphone. Nobody is on camera.

**Does the AI tutor remember me?**

Yes. Each class is recorded as what was covered and what was not, and the next class is planned from it. You can export or delete your data from Account Settings.

**Can an AI tutor make mistakes?**

Yes, like any AI. Check important facts against your textbook or teacher. Tutix's ready-made AP and IGCSE programs use lessons and questions reviewed in advance, so the tutor is not improvising the syllabus.
