# Affordable tutoring: what it costs, and what to expect

**The short answer.** Listings on tutoring marketplaces commonly run from about $25 to $100 or more an hour in the US, with test prep and advanced subjects at the top. Tutix's AI tutor works out to about $2 to $3 an hour of live class time, by plan, and the Free plan costs nothing. An AI tutor is not the same service as a human tutor, so compare what you need before you compare prices.

- US marketplace tutors: about $24 to $108 an hour for math, $25 to $170 for SAT prep (2025 study)
- Tutix Pro: $15 a month for 6 hours of live classes, about $2.50 an hour
- Tutix Pro+: $30 a month for 15 hours, about $2 an hour
- Free plan: 45 live minutes a month, no card
- Prices change: check each source's date

## What does a private tutor cost per hour?

There is no national survey of what families pay for tutoring. The figures below are the prices tutors and agencies list on marketplaces and in their own guides. Read them as a guide to the range, not as a quote, and note the date of each.

| Option | Price |
| --- | --- |
| US math tutors Marketplace average, range of 3,600 tutors (Wiingy, 2025) | $46 average, $24 to $108 |
| US SAT prep tutors Marketplace average, range (Wiingy, 2025) | $62 average, $25 to $170 |
| US calculus tutors Listed range (Wyzant, December 2024) | $35 to $100 |
| US test prep, posted starting rate Average of starting rates tutors post (Care.com, September 2025) | $100 |
| Tutix Pro $15 a month for 6 hours of live class time | $2.50 an hour |
| Tutix Pro+ $30 a month for 15 hours of live class time | $2 an hour |

In the UK, tutoring guides from agencies and revision sites put GCSE tutoring at about £30 to £50 an hour and A level at about £35 to £60, and more in London.

| UK tutoring (per hour) | GCSE | A level | Source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Save My Exams, November 2025 | £35 to £50 | £40 to £60 | Revision resource |
| The Profs, updated September 2026 | £30 to £45 | £35 to £50 | Tuition agency |

One more number is useful for context. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median hourly wage of $20.84 for tutors in May 2025. That is what tutors earn as employees, not what a family pays, and it does not count tutors who work for themselves on marketplaces.

## What does Tutix cost?

You can start on the Free plan: 45 live class minutes a month (about one class of the default length), no card needed. Pro is $15 a month for 6 hours of live class time, and Pro+ is $30 for 15 hours.

| Plan | Price | Live class time a month | Works out to | Note |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Free | $0 | 45 min | about one class | No card needed |
| Pro | $15 a month | 360 min (6 hours) | $2.50 an hour | $150 a year if paid yearly |
| Pro+ | $30 a month | 900 min (15 hours) | $2 an hour | $300 a year if paid yearly |
| Pico | No monthly fee | Pay as you go | $3 an hour ($0.05 a minute) | Paid from a wallet you top up |

The hourly figure is the plan's price divided by the live class hours it includes, when you use them all. Live class time is the tutor teaching you; other limits (study items, messages, uploads) are on the pricing page.

> **Compare like with like.** A human tutor can notice that you are tired, argue a point of judgment and be a mentor. An AI tutor is there at any hour, never runs out of patience and makes frequent practice affordable. Many families use an AI tutor for the regular practice and keep a human for the occasional specialist session.

To pay once for a whole course instead of by the month, a program pass holds one program's class hours at one level, with no subscription. Every program and its price is on the Programs page.

## How to spend less on any tutoring

- Know the goal. A topic you keep missing, or an exam date, tells you how many hours you need. Ask for a plan before you buy a package.
- Pay for practice, not for waiting. The hours that help most are the ones where you write and get feedback.
- Start free. Try the Free plan for a class before paying for anything, here or anywhere else.
- Check the cancellation terms. First-time paid Tutix subscriptions come with a 30-day money-back guarantee, and you can cancel at any time.

## Questions

**How much does a private tutor cost per hour?**

Published marketplace listings in the US commonly run from about $25 to $100 or more an hour: a 2025 study of 3,600 tutors found math averaging $46 an hour (range $24 to $108) and SAT prep $62 (range $25 to $170). UK agencies list GCSE tutoring at about £30 to £50 an hour. These are listing prices, not a survey of what families pay.

**What is the cheapest way to get a tutor?**

Start with free options and then compare cost per hour of real teaching. Tutix's Free plan includes 45 live class minutes a month with no card, and its plans work out to about $2 to $3 an hour of live class time.

**Is an AI tutor cheaper than a human tutor?**

Per hour of live class time, yes, by a wide margin: about $2 to $3 on Tutix against listings of $25 and up for human tutors. They are different services, so the better question is which one gives you the practice you need.

**Is cheap tutoring any good?**

Price alone does not tell you. A cheap tutor who knows your syllabus, reads your work and sees you regularly is worth more than an expensive one you see once. Ask what happens in a session and what record you get afterwards.

**Does Tutix have hidden costs?**

The prices are on the pricing page: the monthly plan, plus the option to keep going past your included limits, paid from a wallet you top up. Nothing is charged without you choosing a paid plan or topping up.

**Can I cancel Tutix at any time?**

Yes. You can cancel from your Billing page and keep paid features until the end of the period. First-time paid subscriptions are covered by a 30-day money-back guarantee.
